Question 1

Comprehension:
Read the given passage and answer the questions that follow.

Walter Hunt was a highly creative American mechanical engineer. He built his first sewing machine in America in 1834. He also used the first eye needle. He also invented the first safety pin. The story behind it was to settle a debt he owed to William and John Richardson. They forgave the debt and agreed to pay a small fee only if he could make something useful out of the wire.
On April 10, 1849, he patented a safety pin called the Dress Game. He assigned all patent rights to Richardson.
The next day, the safety pin was patented in England by Charles Rowley.
He never patented the sewing machine. Nearly 20 years later, Elias Howe reinvented and patented the needle eye sewing machine.
Hunt's needle was made with one end of wire wrapped around a spring and the other end with another clasp and point. This allowed the tip of the wire to be pushed into the clasp by the spring.
